Why it matters

PATHFINDER2 MINI combines GPS tracking with a training collar through a free phone app, with no monthly fee. Range is 4 miles and it handles up to 21 dogs. The 5.3 oz collar fits necks from 11 in and suits dogs 25 lb and up, such as beagles. A COMPASS handheld bundle is offered.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

Good fit if

  • Hunters
  • Smaller sporting dogs
  • No-plan buyers

Look elsewhere if

  • Owners avoiding subscriptions (check plan)
  • Dogs under the size minimum
  • Owners who won't charge regularly

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No subscription
  • 4 miles
  • 21 dogs

Cons

  • Static included
  • Price
  • Phone-based

Limitations to weigh

  • Trackers report where a dog is, not keep it safe; location updates lag, accuracy drops near buildings and trees, and a flat battery means no location.
  • Static corrections are aversive; use tone or vibration first and the lowest level that works.
