Dog Crates & Kennels
Wire, soft-sided, heavy-duty, furniture-style and travel crates, compared on size, doors, materials and who each type suits.
A crate should be big enough for your dog to stand, turn around and lie flat, and small enough to feel like a den. Most wire crates come with a divider panel so a puppy's space can grow with them.
The type matters as much as the size. Wire crates fold flat and ventilate well; soft crates are light for travel but easy to escape; heavy-duty steel crates are built for determined escape artists; furniture crates double as side tables but are rarely as strong.
What decides it
Size
Measure your dog from nose to base of tail and add 2 to 4 in; height should clear the top of the head when sitting.
Escape and chewing
Dogs that bend bars or chew need a heavy-duty crate, not a wire or soft one.
Travel
Airline travel usually needs a hard-sided kennel; check the airline's own rules before you buy.
Doors and trays
Two doors make placement easier; a leak-proof tray matters for puppies.
