Fountain filters and pump maintenance costs

The fountain is a one-off; filters are forever.

By SnoutSmart Editorial · Updated October 2026

The short answer

Running a fountain means replacement filters, weekly pump cleaning and an occasional new pump. Filter prices vary by brand, so check the cost before you buy; models that include extra filters (Pektaco includes eight) lower the first year's cost. Pump power use is small.

Ongoing costs

  • Filters: replaced on the maker's schedule; more often with hard water or multiple pets.
  • Pumps: wear out over time; buy a spare if the maker sells one.
  • Power: a small pump, under 1 W on some models (MISFANS lists 0.7 W).

Pump care

  • Unplug, remove the pump and rinse the impeller weekly.
  • Descale in hard-water areas.
  • Never let the pump run dry.

Lower-cost choices

Pektaco ships with eight filters; RIZZARI filters by gravity with no pump.
