The short answer
Put the crate in the cargo area behind the rear seats or on the floor, pushed against the seatback, and strap it to the vehicle's cargo anchors with ratchet or cam straps rated for the load. Use the smallest crate your dog fits comfortably, and follow the crate maker's instructions.
Placement
- Cargo area, against the rear seatback, is usually best.
- Avoid the front seat (airbags).
- Turn the crate so the door faces away from the cargo opening if possible.
Strapping
- Use the vehicle's cargo anchors, not headrest posts.
- Use straps rated above the crate plus dog weight.
- Cinch until the crate can't slide or tip.
- Check straps every trip.
