Electronic fences and multiple dogs

Every dog needs its own collar, settings and training.

By SnoutSmart Editorial · Updated October 2026

The short answer

In-ground and wireless fences cover any number of dogs wearing compatible collars; you buy an extra collar per dog. GPS fences need one GPS collar per dog (SpotOn notes each dog needs its own collar), and some need a plan per collar. Set and train each dog individually.

Settings per dog

  • Use the lowest level each dog responds to; it differs between dogs.
  • Small dogs may need tone-only or vibration.
  • Train each dog separately before letting them play together near the boundary.
