How big a yard does a GPS dog fence need?

GPS accuracy is measured in feet, so small yards leave no margin.

The short answer

Most GPS fences are designed for about a third of an acre to half an acre or more: SpotOn designs for about 1/3 acre and PetSafe's Guardian GPS 2.0 for 1/2 acre without dense trees. Halo is the exception, stating fences from 900 sq ft. On smaller lots, an in-ground or wireless fence usually fits better.

Why GPS needs room

GPS positions wander by several feet, more under trees and near buildings. The collar needs space between the boundary and your house so it doesn't correct your dog on the patio.

Halo's claim of fences from 900 sq ft is why Halo Collar 5 is often the only GPS option for suburban lots.

Smaller yards

SafetyNo electronic fence is a physical barrier. Never rely on one alone near a busy road.
