Why it matters
The lid opens only for pets whose microchip is registered, so one pet can't eat another's prescription diet. It reads 9 (AVID Secure), 10 (FDX-A) and 15 (FDX-B) digit chips. The bowl holds 13.5 fl oz of wet or dry food, and the lid seals against a neoprene lip to keep food fresher. It runs on batteries.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Good fit if
- Prescription diets
- Multi-pet homes
- Food thieves
Look elsewhere if
- Long absences without a sitter
- Wet food (unless supported)
- Dogs that break into hoppers
Pros and cons
Pros
- Microchip access
- Wet or dry
- Sealing lid
Cons
- Small bowl
- Price
- Small dogs and cats only
Limitations to weigh
- Automatic feeders can jam or lose power; test for a few days before you travel, keep a backup plan, and never leave a dog alone for days with only a feeder.
- Check portions against your dog's feeding guide; 'cups' on feeders are rarely a true 8 oz measuring cup.
