Why it matters
The XL is sized for big dogs: the spec lists a 44 lb minimum, while Tractive's FAQ says XL models suit dogs over 55.1 lb. Battery is listed at up to 6 weeks on the product page and up to 4 weeks in the FAQ. It uses AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile LTE in the US and is IP68. An Adventure edition adds an extra-strong case. A subscription is required.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Good fit if
- Large dogs
- Long battery
- US coverage
Look elsewhere if
- Owners avoiding subscriptions (check plan)
- Dogs under the size minimum
- Owners who won't charge regularly
Pros and cons
Pros
- Long battery
- Three US networks
- Health tracking
Cons
- Plan required
- Battery claims vary
- Large size
Limitations to weigh
- Trackers report where a dog is, not keep it safe; location updates lag, accuracy drops near buildings and trees, and a flat battery means no location.
- Check the subscription cost over two or three years, not just the device price.
