Dog Ramps & Stairs
Stairs and ramps for beds, couches and vehicles, compared on height, step depth, surface and weight limit.
Stairs suit dogs that can still climb; ramps are better for dogs with arthritis, long backs or after surgery, because there is no step to lift a leg onto. Match the top of the stairs or ramp to the height of the bed, couch or vehicle floor.
For vehicles, a longer ramp gives a gentler slope. A non-slip surface and side rails help nervous or older dogs, and the listed weight limit should comfortably exceed your dog's weight.
What decides it
Height and length
Measure the bed, couch or cargo floor; longer ramps give gentler slopes.
Stairs or ramp
Ramps for stiff joints and long-backed breeds; stairs for dogs that climb comfortably.
Grip
Carpeted or rubber surfaces give more traction than smooth plastic.
Weight limit
Choose a rating well above your dog's weight.
